Learn about A.C. Townley, a then-Socialist who founded the Nonpartisan League after concluding that the divide between the rural and urban members of the  Socialist Party was too large to satisfy both. At the end of the Progressive Era, as the country moved toward World War I, Townley sought to tap into the political desires of farmers in the Prairie. Utilizing his innovative recruiting skills, Townley began campaigning all over the upper Midwest using cars, planes, and his own charisma to great success in recruiting members for the Nonpartisan League.
