Explore what it means to be a U.S. citizen while maintaining one’s own ethnic identity using this video from the PBS KIDS series ARTHUR. When D.W.’s friend Cheikh, who has come to the United States from Senegal, learns he is about to become a U.S. citizen, he is worried that he’ll have to give up what he loves about the Senegalese culture. The other characters offer their notions of what is “American,” but Brain eventually explains that “America is made up of all different cultures.” After watching, children engage in discussion and activities to explore notions of citizenship and diversity.
