Big & Messy: Reaching and Maintaining Net Zero | Weathered

Weathered host Maiya May explores an array of nature-based and technological solutions that aim to balance Earth’s emissions scales now and in an environmentally healthy future. May meets with climate scientists who describe how reaching and maintaining net zero carbon emissions is not going to be perfect or pretty, but is necessary for the future of life on Earth as we know it. 

Students will learn more about how Earth’s carbon cycle is being impacted by human emissions and how forests, oceans, and new technologies factor into balancing the global carbon equation. Through engagement activities, students will interact with real data about carbon emissions across the major economic sectors of the United States to make evidence-based arguments regarding carbon reduction practices.

About the Author:

Merek Chang is a high school science teacher in Hacienda La Puente Unified School District in Southern California. He received his B.S. from UC Davis and an M.A. in education from San Diego State University. He is a KQED Media Literacy Innovator and is passionate about uplifting student voices and connecting the community to the classroom through the lens of environmental literacy and civic engagement.
