Birding by Ear | Attenborough’s Wonder of Song

This resource incorporates activities that take learning beyond the four walls of the classroom and into nature. Whether it’s the schoolyard, a local park, or simply outside the window, birds can be found everywhere if one takes the time to observe and listen.

Students will discover the remarkable world of bird song with these videos from Nature‘s Attenborough’s Wonder of Song. After viewing the episode segments, students will participate in two field-based activities. Firstly, they will engage in a basic exercise of listening and nature journaling. Then, they will practice identifying birds by their sounds using the Merlin Bird ID app’s innovative sound ID tool, developed by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology.
