Black Soldiers, The Harlem Hellfighters, and the Battle of Henry Johnson | Henry Johnson

In this activity, students will learn about the role of Black soldiers in World War I by examining the case of Henry Johnson, a resident of Albany, New York, who fought in France with the 369^th Regiment. After viewing a film clip, they will compare primary source accounts of his defense against a German attack in May 1918, for which he was awarded the Croix de Guerre by the French government and celebrated throughout the United States. Students will assess how Black soldiers were viewed in World War I, how and why sources may differ, and what we can and cannot learn from primary sources. Full activity will take 1-2 class periods.
