Charles Williams | Kentucky Studies

Art made by Charles Williams is referred to as outsider art, African American vernacular art, and African American futurism. Williams was born in 1942 and grew up in Blue Diamond, an old coal town outside of Hazard, Kentucky. He loved superheroes and sci-fi comic books, which inspired him to create his own. He made art with whatever he found at hand, whether it was mud as a child or leftover plastic drippings from the factory where he worked as a maintenance man.
