Comparing Speeds and Prices

In this video lesson, students learn that when two ratios are associated with the same rate per 1, they are equivalent ratios. To determine whether two ratios are equivalent, students find and compare their associated rates per 1. They also notice that dividing one of the quantities in a ratio by the other is an efficient way to find a rate per 1, while attending to the meaning of that number in context (MP2). Students calculate rates per 1 in familiar contexts—to determine which car is traveling faster and selecting the better deal in a grocery store.
