A dam is a barrier that is built across a river to hold back its water, creating a reservoir. Dams serve various purposes, from flood control to water supply to energy generation. Milltown is at the convergence of two rivers, the Clark Fork and Blackfoot. This makes it an ideal site for industrial development. The construction of both the dam and mill in 1908 transformed the landscape. It created a source of energy for the growing populations around Missoula and Bonner.
