At the turn of the 19th century, several Native American prophets called for the return to traditional ways for their people. This meant that they needed to expel the United States from their territory. In order to accomplish that, some tribes—including the Upper Creek—aligned with the British during the War of 1812. The Lower Creek Indians, however, had already heavily assimilated into American culture, so they aligned with the U.S. during the war.
