Earth Measure: The Nature of Sound Waves | Outdoor Art

Take students on an exploration of Earth Measure, a captivating stone sculpture by Matt Weir nestled within the scenic Bernheim Forest and Arboretum. This short video and accompanying support materials will help students understand how art can inspire scientific inquiry and how science can inform and inspire art, as they explore the interplay of sound, geometry, and the human senses.

The video shows students interacting with the sculpture in different ways: counting the steps between the main structures, looking through the lens at different parts of the arboretum, playing on the concrete, and talking to one another through the huge acoustic mirror. It also shows how the sculpture takes its inspiration—and name—from geometry by highlighting shapes and spatial relationships.
