George Washington’s Leadership Traits and Strategies

Explore how General George Washington’s leadership united the Continental Army and the emerging nation, and ultimately secured victory in the American Revolution. Through historical analysis and a focus on Washington’s leadership traits, students examine pivotal moments in Washington’s command, from his appointment as General to his decisive actions at Trenton and during the Newburgh Conspiracy. Students assess his strategic decisions and compelling techniques, including the Newburgh Address, to understand how he earned the trust and respect of soldiers and civilians alike. By analyzing primary sources, students also gain insight into the personal challenges he faced and his unwavering perseverance. Through discussion questions and primary source analysis, students identify the qualities of effective leadership and learn to appreciate their enduring significance.

About the Author:
Bonnie A. Belshe has taught U.S. history and AP U.S. history for more than twenty years at Monta Vista High School in Cupertino, California, and currently serves as department chair. In 2014, the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History named Belshe the California History Teacher of the Year. In 2017-2018, Belshe was awarded the Life Guard Teacher Fellowship from Mount Vernon and has served as a teacher facilitator for the George Washington Teacher Institute since 2020.
