German Nationalism and Antisemitism | Return to Auschwitz

Examine how the rise in German nationalism coupled with antisemitism following World War I impacted the life of Czech Holocaust survivor Vladimir Munk. Students will review primary resources and analyze how nationalism served as the springboard for the Nazis to engage in a three-pronged plan to scapegoat and persecute the Jewish people. This plan included violence, legal restrictions, and propaganda, the effects of which would be felt by Vladimir and his family as they lost access to jobs, food, and education.

Using the video clip from the documentary Return to Auschwitz: The Survival of Vladimir Munk and other relevant resources, students will analyze how the Nazis employed legislation, propaganda, and violence to create an atmosphere of anti-Semitism disguised as nationalism, and explore the repercussions of these methods on Czech Jews, including Vladimir and his family.
