Learn about the fascinating art of printing directly from fish! Gyotaku was invented by Japanese fishermen as a way of recording the fish they caught (and providing proof when they boasted about the size of their catch). Artist Stephen Dicerbo demonstrates how he combined his love of fishing and his love of art by learning the traditional Japanese art form of gyotaku.

In the related activity, students will make their own prints using objects that can be inked and printed such as plastic fish, leaves, or other textured items. (Fresh fish are optional!) The video, discussion, and art activity will take one or two 45-minute class session.
