Hacking the System to Save the Forest | Dynamic Planet

Due to warming winters, the mountain pine beetle habitat is shifting northward into the forests of Alberta, Canada. Swarms of tree-gnawing beetles have now moved in and killed millions of hectares of pine trees so far.
In this case study video, scientists describe how they exploited the pheromone-based communication system used by the beetles to develop a nature-based—but small-scale—solution to the costly deforestation.
Through viewing questions and engagement activities, students will discuss the biology of the beetles and trees and determine the patterns of cause and effect that led to both the beetle infestations and also to scientists designing a novel solution. Students have the option to explore other ways to disrupt these cause-and-effect patterns, brainstorm methods of scaling up the solution, and debate why humans are engaged in finding solutions.
