Hazel Scott and the Harlem Renaissance | The Disappearance of Miss Scott

Examine how the Great Migration from the West Indies and the American South led to an explosion of African American art, literature, and music known as the Harlem Renaissance,  and consider the influence that coming of age during the Harlem Renaissance had on pianist Hazel Scott’s musical talent and her political sensibility. Using videos from the American Masters film The Disappearance of Miss Scott, discussion questions, and primary documents, students learn how Scott was shaped by the Harlem in which she grew up.
