History of Stone Mountain | Iconic America

Learn about Stone Mountain, Georgia—home of the largest Confederate monument. The monument is a relief carving of three famous Confederates—Jefferson Davis, Robert E. Lee and Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson. The monument is carved into a unique, enormous granite outcropping and was started in 1915 and not completed until 1972.

Students will explore arguments over the potential future of Stone Mountain from opposing points of view and calculate the massive size of the relief carving.
