How Archaeologists Study History | Kentucky Field Trips

Explore the long human history of the land we now call Kentucky through the work of archaeology. Archaeologists study artifacts, or the objects left behind by people. In this field trip, we go on the scene with Kentucky archaeologists at excavations in Jefferson and Franklin counties. We also visit the archaeology lab at Western Kentucky University, where artifacts are cleaned and studied. And we talk with Carl Shields, an archaeologist at the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, to learn more about the latest techniques for discovering what’s hidden in the landscape.
