Olivia Gross guides students in arguing Supreme Court cases using a technique inspired by a Jewish religious study tradition that taught her you can’t weigh an opinion without understanding how it might be challenged. In a Civic Decision Lab inspired by her work, students make arguments from assigned perspectives. They learn about Supreme Court rulings on student speech as they write the rules for a school event where classmates speak out on issues they care about, practicing the open-mindedness good decisions require.
