Image and Text | Creative Lesson Plans for Personal Storytelling

Students learn about how photographers work with images and text with a goal to inspire students to use text—whether captions or longer prose or poetic pieces—to enlarge upon the story in an image.  The lesson includes examples of professional photographic work with captions and discussion points on how text with an image alters our thinking about the image. The activity includes students selecting a family photo to share with the class and a writing activity where students write their own captions for their selected photo.
