Learn how John Marshall, as Chief Justice, strengthened the Supreme Court’s power and established the principle of judicial review, shaping the foundation of American constitutional law.

Students will analyze John Marshall’s judicial philosophy, especially the belief that the Constitution is a “superior, paramount law,” as they investigate and explain three landmark Supreme Court decisions written by Marshall’s court. They will then connect each case to the principles of constitutional supremacy, judicial review, and limits on power. Finally, they will engage in a Socratic Seminar to discuss if Marshall had a long-term impact on American democracy.
