The life of Mary Todd Lincoln, wife of President Abraham Lincoln, was filled with promise and a great deal of sorrow. 

Mary Todd was born in Lexington, Kentucky, in 1818. Her father, businessman and politician Robert Todd, believed in education for his daughters. Mary had 13 years of formal schooling, far more than her future husband, who had less than a year.
