From the beginning of the pandemic, officials warned against gathering in large crowds and keeping to the recommended distance when gathering at all. Little was known about the airborne nature of the virus, but epidemiologists hypothesized that people remaining less than six feet apart for more than 10 minutes at a time had a higher likelihood of spreading the disease. Warnings about mass gatherings went unheeded. In this video, cell phone data was used to monitor mass gatherings and their connection to the spread of COVID-19.
