Meet the Strings Family | Omaha Symphony Virtual Instruments

Meet the String Family and learn about its different members. Strings come in many sizes. Most have the same shape. Most are wooden, with four strings, played by pulling a horsehair bow across or plucking with your fingers. The smallest and highest is the violin. The biggest and lowest is the bass. A harp is the most unique of the strings, with an open frame and 47 strings you pluck to play.  

This resource demonstrates different playing techniques such as pizzicato and arco, in addition to describing the different sounds. Examples are provided for each instrument.
