Miss Indian America | Wyoming’s Native Americans

From 1953 to 1984, the Miss Indian America pageant in Sheridan, Wyoming became an unexpected but powerful force for change in a town long shaped by a deep racial divide. At a time when Native Americans faced daily discrimination, the historic event was created as a counter-narrative to honor and celebrate Native women. As contestants from tribes across the country shared their cultures and participated in public events, the community began to see racial attitudes shift. The prejudice that once defined daily life in Sheridan slowly gave way to curiosity and respect, opening the door to greater understanding and a more inclusive sense of community.
