Ocean Food Web | The Ocean’s Greatest Feast

Between May and June, billions of tiny sardines gather along the East coast of South Africa forming one of nature’s largest biomass migrations. Although scientists do not yet fully understand how the sardines benefit from this migration, what it known is that many animals along the coast depend on this migration for food, especially during their mating seasons. In this video from NATURE’s The Ocean’s Greatest Feast, students will learn about the sardine run and observe the different animals that rely on this “moving feast” such as seals, dolphins, and sharks. Students will also learn about the adaptations and strategies that different animals employ to hunt and to avoid becoming prey.
