Ojibwe Seasonal Constellations | Northern Nights, Starry Skies

Ojibwe artist and scholar Carl Gawboy has worked for decades to understand how constellations in the northern night sky relate to cultural stories, seasonal conditions, and common traditional activities. In the four videos that make up this Media Gallery, Carl introduces four constellations recognized by the Ojibwe in Northern Minnesota and explains how each one appears during just one of the four seasons. He highlights characters from his book Talking Sky, and describes the characters that are associated with each constellation, the stars that make up each constellation, and how those characters relate to important Ojibwe cultural themes.
