Othering: Understanding How Prejudice Shapes Communities | Namba: A Japanese American’s Incarceration and Life of Resilience

Meet May Namba, the American child of Japanese immigrants, who grew up in Seattle in the 1920s and 30s. Learn about her youth and some of the discrimination she faced before her incarceration during World War II. This resource combines video, teaching tips, and discussion questions to help students understand how prejudice and exclusion shaped historical events and communities, identity, and social justice awareness. Students will examine firsthand experiences, connect history to their own lives, and develop empathy while learning the importance of resilience and advocacy.
