Part One: The Circle Makers | Move to Include

Nationwide, schools have been undertaking inclusive school reform with positive results and have found that inclusion and belonging are essential conditions for educating each child. Nonetheless, critiques of inclusion are common. There are tales of unsupported classroom teachers or students floundering in general education settings. Some claim, “We tried it and it didn’t work.” These are not critiques about inclusion at all. They are instead critiques of “mainstreaming” efforts which bring students into the general education classroom but leave the school’s structures, norms, and policies unchanged.

This segment is from WCNY’s Move to Include initiative, which explores how an inclusive education setting can break traditional segregating lines in the classroom, and bring forth a positive impact with the support of Circle Makers who can usher in positive changes for both students with disabilities and the entire school community, as well.
