Renewable Energy Solutions: Rise of the Megacranes | Overview

9th Grade – 12th Grade

English

Construction of massive, renewable energy installations is on the rise around the world, and bigger, more flexible engineering solutions are needed to make it happen.

This episode from Overview explores the design and construction of enormous cranes that are capable of assembling gigantic wind turbines and solar farms.

Through the media, hands-on projects, and real-world case studies, students will gain insights into the technological innovations that are arising as a result of efforts to harness more affordable, less environmentally damaging forms of energy. In addition, the fundamental physics that make such engineering feats possible is also presented, with opportunities for students to apply what they know through discussion.

Further engagement activities allow students to analyze existing renewable energy projects to better understand the importance of scalability, efficiency, and sustainability in machine design. Collaborative activities encourage critical thinking and problem-solving as students envision and prototype their own designs for large machines.
