Solving Problems Using Indigenous Knowledge | Native America

In this lesson, students will examine how Indigenous knowledge can be used to solve problems in science, engineering, technology, and mathematics. 

Independently or working in small groups, students will watch a clip of their choice from the documentary Native America. Drawing on the information presented in the clip, students will use a guided note catcher to engage critically with the content presented. Using this tool, students will identify evidence to demonstrate how Indigenous Knowledge enhances the ability to solve problems in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. 

The lesson closes with students engaging in a larger group evidence gathering gallery walk and summarizing conversation about how Indigenous knowledge can be used to solve problems.

As an extension, students will critically analyze the video clips to gain inspiration and knowledge to create their own media (infographic, short video, social media post, etc.) with the goal of sharing with others how Indigenous knowledge enhances our society.

Anjanette Parisien is a citizen of the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa (Belcourt, North Dakota) and currently lives in Plymouth, Minnesota.
