Suffrage for Black Women | Retro Report

Explore the pivotal but often overlooked story of how Black women combated racism and sexism to secure the right to vote. Despite the ratification of the 19th Amendment in 1920, many Black  women faced persistent disenfranchisement due to discriminatory state laws, poll taxes, intimidation, and literacy tests. It wasn’t until the passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 that significant barriers to voting were outlawed. Challenges persist today with voter registration restrictions, voter ID laws, and other voting suppression tactics disproportionately impacting communities of color.
