In this lesson, Farmer Nick and Plant teach you about soil, the foundation of all plant life!

Soil is more than just dirt. Soil contains air, water, rocks, and organic matter that then creates sand, silt, or clay.

But not all soils are created equal! Growing your own plants can be easy or hard depending on what your soil contains. In order to thrive, most plants need soil with several different ingredients, not just one or two. (Have you ever noticed that you don’t see grass growing on the beach? It’s because the soil has too much sand!)

Farmer Nick and Plant will show you how to compare soil from two different places, like your backyard and the beach, then how to decide which soil is better for growing plants. The hands-on part of this lesson will require you to set things up, wait, and come back later, but you can do something else (like draw, color, or nap) while you wait.

Watch out for that magical garden gnome!
