Tape Diagrams and Equations

The purpose of this video lesson is to activate students’ prior knowledge about using tape diagrams to represent operations. The focus is on using diagrams to help visualize a relationship. In this lesson, students both interpret tape diagrams and create their own.

Note that the terms solution and variable aren’t defined in the lesson, nor should any solution methods be generalized. Students should engage with the activities and reason about unknown quantities in ways that make sense to them.
