The Black Beans | A Look at Remington

An artistic journalist, Remington had an eye for important events. Remington’s encounters with war and war-related events  had an impact on his art work. His paintings become darker, both in narrative and in actual presentation and use of color.

Remington’s painting, The Mier Expedition: Drawing of the Black Beans, depicted an intense historic event for which he was not present or even alive. This painting showcases how captured Texans were forced to draw beans to determine who survived recapture after their failed attempt at escape from their Mexican captors.
