The Legacy of Henry David Thoreau’s “Civil Disobedience”

Discover how Henry David Thoreau’s ideas, and his essay “Civil Disobedience,” inspired civil rights leaders of the 20th century. Students learn that Thoreau witnessed great injustices, such as the institution of slavery and the Mexican-American War, but also that he felt compelled to take action against these injustices. Thoreau advocated for nonviolent resistance and argued that individuals had a moral obligation to stand up against government injustices. Through viewing a media clip and engaging in a close reading of excerpts from “Civil Disobedience,” students explore how these ideas inspired civil rights leaders and how they found solace and motivation in his words.
