Seven years after the Brown v. Board of Education decision, the city of Memphis finally confronted the issue of desegregation. In 1961, thirteen African-American first graders entered four formerly all-white schools. Enduring isolation and hostility, these brave children literally took the first steps in breaking down the color barrier in Memphis public schools.
