This is Why Way Worse Droughts Mean Way Worse Floods | Weathered

In these videos, host Maiya May investigates the role that climate change is playing in our increasingly erratic weather and precipitation patterns, and visits a city where people have adapted with nature-based solutions.

Students will learn about existing weather systems and how these systems will be impacted with continuing climate change. Adaptation and mitigation efforts are also presented, and students learn how these are already successfully helping communities.

Through guided discussions, students will explore how human activities are disrupting Earth’s water cycle. Further engagement activities give students the opportunity to use what they’ve learned to evaluate their community’s preparedness through a risk map and infrastructure analysis and/or an intergenerational interview and media-making project.

Merek Chang is a high school science teacher in Hacienda La Puente Unified School District in Southern California. He received his B.S from UC Davis and an M.A in education from San Diego State University. He is a KQED Media Literacy Innovator and is passionate about uplifting student voices and connecting the community to the classroom through the lens of environmental literacy and civic engagement.
