Tie Hack Heritage: The Railroad and Wyoming

“Tie hack” is the nickname given to the men who, throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries, harvested logs and hacked them into railroad ties. The work was hard and dangerous — it started with cutting down trees in the forest and ended with sending the prepared logs downstream. Starting around 1915, Dubois, Wyoming, became home to a daring and tenacious group of tie hacks whose work contributed to the industry that was the lifeblood of the nation, and they gave Dubois its identity.
