What is Metrology? | The Last Artifact

This film reveals the hidden process of science, the work that goes on behind the scenes, far reaching and with life-changing implications for the rest of us. Over the course of two years, The Last Artifact follows an endearing group of scientists as they work against the clock to secure the measurement system upon which all modern life depends.   On one side of the equation, we follow scientific teams in Germany and Japan, as they work with the silicon sphere – the roundest object on the planet – to redefine the kilogram using Avogadro’s Constant.  On the other side, we follow teams in Canada, the United States, and the United Kingdom, as they build some of the most revolutionary and elaborate scales in the world – called Watt Balances –  to redefine the kilogram using Planck’s Constant.
