Zimbabwean Mbira Music with Tanyaradzwa | Carnegie Hall: Musical Explorers

Introduce your students to Tanyaradzwa with this “Meet Tanyaradzwa” video.

“Hurombo Gara Wega” is part of a genre of spiritual songs in the ChiVanhu tradition, which honor and create a spiritual connection to ancestors. These songs are generally played at ceremonies and rituals called mapira on a special kind of mbira called Mbira dzaVadzimu.

“Pamuromo paHaruna” is from a genre of songs that are sung at parties and celebrations for fun and recreation. These songs are played with a different kind of mbira called a Nyunga Nyunga, or “sparkle sparkle.”
