Now residing in Detroit, James was born in Flint, Michigan, and recalls one of his earliest childhood memories of attending career day in the second grade as an artist. Since that moment, he has worked tirelessly to evolve in his destiny.

Artist Demonstration: James Thigpen Jr.

Learn about the art and artistic process of Kayla Powers, a weaver and natural dyer living and working in Detroit, Michigan.

Her work is focused on local, natural color derived from plants foraged from and cultivated in the city. Preservation of the traditional crafts of weaving and dyeing are at the heart of Kayla’s work. She is inspired by the limitations of a seasonal palette and the utilitarian nature of woven cloth.

Her portraits of public icons are historically immersive and reflect on the narrative of her subjects by including artifacts and phrases within each piece. She is known for her distinctive mixture of street art and traditional oil technique.
