Making Memory | Chip Kids

4th Grade – 5th Grade

6th Grade – 8th Grade

The Chip Kids travel to Boise State University with support from Micron to learn how digital memory really works. With a focus on SSDs (Solid State Drives) that store data electronically, the kids explore how our devices save information every day.

Using what they learn, the team builds their own SSD memory and creates physical models that demonstrate how data can be written, stored, and retrieved. They assemble these builds on a shared Chip Kids memory board, designing pathways for information to travel just like in real hardware.

To wrap up the challenge, the Chip Kids pitch their memory design to a panel of three experts, explaining how their builds work and why they chose their specific layout.
