A Green Economy from Blue Foods | Hope in the Water

A local community is developing a green economy: a domestic market for local fish.

Through case studies taken from Hope in the Water, students learn about a mismatch between local demand and local supply. By tapping into the diversity of their communities and building new connections to local fishers, changemakers found a green—or rather a blue—solution.

Engagement activities coach students to explore economic decision making and its impacts. Students will be introduced to a cause and effect relationship: how eating habits and cultural preferences can impact grocery buying choices. Students will see how business leaders and suppliers might solve challenges and disrupt their industries by being more socially inclusive.

Michelle Blanchet is the co-founder of The Educators’ Lab—an organization that supports teacher-driven projects that create impact for students and their communities. A former teacher herself, she has worked with a wide range of organizations to facilitate changemaking in education and support teacher innovation. She is the author of two books.
