Ancient Aquaculture for Modern Food Security | Hope in the Water

Through two case studies of Indigenous aquaculture practices taken from the PBS program Hope in the Water, students will develop a nuanced understanding of sustainable food systems, regenerative processes in a marine ecosystem, and the role of human activity in shaping ecosystem health.

Engagement and reflection questions, plus place-based activities and media-making projects will enable students to critically evaluate and consider solutions for sustainable food practices and their own food choices.

Amelia Cook is a citizen of the Chickasaw Nation, Science Education PhD student and science teacher educator at the University of Oklahoma. Amelia is a teacher ambassador with the National Center for Science Education, EcoRise, and a NOAA Planet Steward. Amelia’s research interests include culturally relevant and responsive pedagogy, Indigenous perspectives and values in science education, and Indigenous representation in STEM.
