Aquaculture for a More Sustainable Future | A Brief History of the Future

Bren Smith discusses his transition from fisherman to seaweed farmer, and the many benefits that have come from innovating in this space—for himself, his community, and the planet. Students will discuss the advantages and disadvantages of our current food systems before engaging with this clip about seaweed aquaculture and the different sustainable uses of kelp.

A lesson plan provides a research and reciprocal learning activity for students to dive deeper into details about seaweed, its global production, consumer goods it’s found in, and the risks and benefits of farming it. Using readings and real data, students will analyze and argue the possibilities of seaweed farming as part of the solution to a more sustainable future.
