Stories of Engagement
On April 1, Detroit PBS and the Michigan Learning Channel hosted our second annual Weather Hunters event at the Michigan Science Center to celebrate the launch of the new PBS KIDS series—and it was an incredible day.
We welcomed over 1,000 participants, including 63 adults and 72 children from Brightmoor and Southwest Detroit who attended for free via four buses. Families experienced hands-on weather exhibits, stepped into the role of TV meteorologists, and explored engineering challenges like building structures to withstand the elements.
A highlight of the day was connecting kids with an expert meteorologist who sparked curiosity and deeper conversations about weather and science. Beloved PBS KIDS characters—Clifford, Elmo, Grover, and Buddy from Dinosaur Train—added excitement too!
We also extended the learning beyond the event with Weather Hunters tote bags and take-home activities for families.
