The Michigan Learning Channel is happy to share professional learning opportunities that help you teach and learn with IM Math. These events are hosted by the Michigan Mathematics and Science Leadership Network (MMSLN).

What is IM Math?

IM Math is a problem-based K-12 math curriculum designed to foster deep, flexible mathematics learning for all. Students learn by doing math, solving problems in mathematical and real-world contexts, and constructing arguments using precise language. Mathematics is not a spectator sport. The value of a problem-based approach is that students spend most of their time in math class doing mathematics: making sense of problems, estimating, trying different approaches, selecting and using appropriate tools, and evaluating the reasonableness of their answers. They go on to interpret the significance of their answers, noticing patterns and making generalizations, explaining their reasoning verbally and in writing, listening to the reasoning of others, and building their understanding. Teachers facilitate student learning with embedded high-leverage routines to ensure learners know, use, and enjoy mathematics.

MLC’s Math Mights is built from the newly released IM K-5 Math. Sixth through ninth graders learn with IM 6-12 Math on the Schoolkit series Illustrative Mathematics.

Continued Learning and Support

As an Illustrative Mathematics certified PL Service Provider, MMSLN offers the support math teachers, coaches, and instructional leaders need to get ready for teaching and learning with IM Math curricula. Choose from a suite of learning experiences designed to take educators on a deep-dive of the curriculum to explore problem-based learning and how they can implement it in their classrooms.

Educators experience IM Math lessons, practice and rehearse key routines, explore various embedded supports for students with disabilities and English language learners, understand assessment materials and begin to use student thinking as a vehicle for productive planning.

Start with this introductory PL for IM Math and then continue your learning throughout the school year with monthly Unit Overviews (6-12) and quarterly Learning Modules (K-5). Learn more on MMSLN’s website
